Life Token CO₂ recognized by the European Commission as a key innovation in climate action.

The project aims to offset CO₂, improve forest quality and reduce the probability of fires

.

The European Life Token CO₂ project has been selected by the European Commission's Innovation Radar as one of the most promising initiatives in the fight against climate change. The GreenScan tool, developed as part of the project, has been identified as a high-impact innovation for its ability to accurately estimate CO₂ absorption in forest stands from satellite images.

This recognition highlights the technological and environmental dimension of the project, whose main objective is to value forest management as an effective tool to reduce emissions and contribute to the climate neutrality target set by the European Union for 2050.

Life Token CO₂ is formed by a multidisciplinary consortium involving business, academic and institutional entities, such as Digiltea, Orthem, the University of Castilla-La Mancha, SGS Tecnos S.A, the Catholic University San Antonio of Murcia (UCAM) and the Region of Murcia.

The initiative develops advanced digital solutions to quantify and certify carbon sequestration in forest ecosystems. Thanks to GreenScan and other complementary technologies such as the LIDAR system, the project makes it possible to obtain accurate and up-to-date information on forest health and productivity, facilitating more efficient decision-making in sustainable forest management.

In addition, the project envisages the creation of a digital platform that will make it possible to record certified CO₂ removals and generate climate tokens, a type of traceable carbon credit using blockchain technologies and smart contracts. This tool lays the foundation for a voluntary, transparent and non-speculative carbon market, complementing the European emissions trading scheme.

Innovation with regulatory impact

The Life Token CO₂ project, recognized by the European Commission for its climate innovation, could achieve a crucial milestone: driving an official regulation that recognizes sustainable forest management as a key carbon sink, thus enabling its access to green credit markets.

Currently, key regulations are being developed and revised in Spain, such as the Common Basic Guidelines for Sustainable Forest Management and the UNE technical standards under public consultation, which establish criteria for sustainable forest management.

Life Token CO₂, through tools such as GreenScan and its blockchain-based certification system, provides technical evidence and traceability that may be fundamental to make these regulations official and open the door to the integration of forests into voluntary and regulated carbon markets.
